It sometimes seems as if their subconscious stretches out with no boundaries, like the open sky, making it awkwardly exposed. Other times they seem like sealed capsules without the slightest fissure or crack through which to peer inside. At Le Courtil a residential facility for emotionally disturbed children, situated along the French border with Belgium, a large staff of therapists tries to penetrate the very different world in which their wards live. This is a tantalizing film that pays close attention to those children. It follows how they relate to their bodies, their means of expression, the moments of frustration and joy and the relationships they build with other children and the staff. At the same time, we get a glimpse into staff meetings, where creative new ways to reach through the children’s shells are explored.Theater, music and cooking workshops are used and also touch and interpersonal communication.
